If you have ever been captivated by the stark white rooftops at business parks, then you already have seen the magic of TPO roofing.

What is TPO?

A short-hand for Thermoplastic Polyolefin, TPO is a single-ply roofing material that is popular for commercial applications. It is a single-ply membrane that combines synthetic components with a fabric reinforcing scrim. The scrim delivers stability and strength to the membrane for optimal performance.

What you need to know

TPO has garnered widespread popularity due to its natural reflective ability. At Nielsen Roofing we often get requests to deflect harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and lower air conditioning bills in the hot Okanagan summer. The TPO roofing system does just this, and it’s durable. It comes with a 30 year warranty on the materials.

Insulation Goes First

Upon removing the surface on which the TPO is to be installed, one also needs to install new insulation.

  1. Polyiso or Polyisocyanurate – This comes with a high R-value, a metric that measures a material’s resistance to heat.
  2. EPS or Expanded Polystyrene – This option offers versatility. It is excellent for roofing as well as floor and wall insulation. Its water-resistant properties makes it an ideal fit when connection or contact to the ground is part of the roofing job.
